Hello again! Junior Broker Jake Swart here, and thanks for following along my journey as I explore the energies markets and the EIA. If you haven’t read my previous articles, you can use the links below. Now let’s get to the important topic: monthly and annual EIA reports.
I’ve focused mainly on the storage reports that are conducted by the EIA every week. However, they produce many other reports that focus on energy topics other than storage. One of their main and well-known reports is the Short Term Energy Outlook (STEO).
The STEO is released on the first Tuesday of the month that follows the first Thursday of the month. The report provides a breakdown of the prices of energy such as crude oil, natural gas and RBOB. They also provide an estimate of the future prices, consumption, and production of all these energies. This report provides in-depth explanations of why they believe prices will move to where they are predicting they’ll move. You can view the data and price estimates in the written form which that is presented in the beginning of the report, but you can also view it in chart and graph form that is presented after the written explanations.
It’s a popular report because it allows readers to get a feel for where the market is going with a strong justification as to why that’s the case. If you’re looking to see exactly what the STEO presents, you can go ahead and follow this link and to check it out: http://www.eia.gov/forecasts/steo/index.cfm.
In addition to the short term reports, the EIA also offers annual reports that provide data and analysis on a more long term basis. One of the most utilized annual reports is the Annual Energy Outlook. This report provides projections similar to the STEO report, but it is based on a yearly basis for multiple years to come. If you’re looking for more specifics on this extensive report, this is where you need to look: http://www.eia.gov/forecasts/aeo/index.cfm. This report is conducted and released once a year in July and provides energy projections for many years to come, i.e., the outlook due this year will have projections through the year 2040.
