In the good old days the USDA would release reports at 7:30 AM central when the Grain markets were closed and we would open up two hours later at 9:30 AM central. This gave market participants enough time to read the report, evaluate the numbers, and begin the next session as informed traders.
Now the USDA releases the report at 11 AM central in a real time trading environment. The markets are open, not closed, when the USDA reports come out. This has presented traders with many new obstacles to overcome during report days.
When the report comes out, the market tends to spike up or down if there are any surprises. When we do have surprises the market tends to move very fast and participants don’t know exactly why. It has caused some traders to lighten up into the report because it takes too long for them to see what the USDA says while prices are going much higher or lower. Wouldn’t it be great if you could actually see the report numbers in real time when the report is released and know how it differed from the prior report?
This is one of the reasons I put out the “Futures Trader’s Guide to the WASDE”. It shows traders how to find the WASDE on the internet and what numbers to focus on so they can get up to speed as soon as possible on USDA report days. Now that the USDA reports are released in real time, it is more important than ever to have a solid understanding on how to read and interpret the reports.
Now, I know everyone can’t download the report at 11 AM and crunch the numbers immediately. However, Grain Analyst has done just this for its subscribers. They have a great new tool called Real Time USDA Analysis. They import the USDA table for US Wheat, Corn and Soybeans when the report is released. They also calculate the change in all the numbers from last month’s report. While everyone is scrambling to find out what the report said and how it differed from the last WASDE, Grain Analyst gives you the information immediately after the report is released at 11 AM.
Grain Analyst’s “Real Time USDA Analysis” is the first place I go when the report is released. It is a must have for grains traders and worth the subscription price for Grain Analyst on its own. The best part is that clients of Daniels Trading and Daniels Ag Services with open and funded accounts have complimentary subscriptions! Just contact your broker and it is on the house.
