We'll fight for coal, Virginia governor tells industry breakfast
Feb 03, 2011 09:19 AM
The administration of the Commonwealth of Virginia will stand side-by-side with the coal mining industry and stare down potentially expensive and stringent federal regulations applied by the Obama administration, the Associated Press reports.
Governor Bob McDonnell, a Republican, told a coal-mining industry breakfast on Tuesday that coal is central to his administration's thrust to establish Virginia as the East Coast's energy capital. The first-term governor further stated his administration is likely to explore legal option should permits to mine surfaces and remove mountaintops be rejected.
"For the foreseeable future we know that coal's going to be an extremely important part of Virginia's and America's energy future," McDonnell told breakfast attendees.
McDonnell said the Obama Administration's efforts regarding policies and regulatory efforts go too far and hold no consideration for creating a balance between stimulating job growth and preoccupations about environmental concerns.
"That's why you see a lot of governors in coal-producing states that have tried to stand strong and have alerted Congress about some of the problems these overburdensome regulations will cause," he said.
